When to Quit Your Job

You’ve worked hard all your life to get your dream job – something that you love and through which you can make a difference.

But somehow, you got stuck in a work environment that feels stagnant, dull, and insignificant. Your job seems to be completely disconnected from your interests and dreams.

Now what?

Relevant contributor Dan Cumberland offers advice on when to quit your job to pursue what you really want to do. He says,

I’m all for you doing the most meaningful work possible in the world. In fact, I want you to do that work. But I also want you to get there in [a] timely and healthy way.

Before you quit your job, Cumberland says, you need to ask three questions:

  1. Do you have a plan?
  2. Is your plan sustainable?
  3. Can you make your dream job work for you as you bridge the gap to your dream work?

Cumberland also encourages encourages patience, especially if you are a starting your career:

It takes time to know the impact that you most want to make, and it takes time to get to a place where you get to focus your energy on making that impact.

Sometimes, it’s those difficult, boring, or unpleasant jobs themselves that help you understand where your gifts and talents lie, develop a plan, and discover new opportunities.
